Window Tinting Information

DID YOU KNOW?

FLORIDA STATE AUTOMOTIVE LEGAL LIMITS

In Florida, all vehicles must follow the Florida state legal limits on vehicle tint. This practice prevents any traffic violation for window tint.

  • Front windshields: Non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line or 6″ down from the top – whichever comes first.
  • The front driver and passenger side windows must be a 30% VLT or lighter.
  • The back sides and rear window must be a 15% VLT or lighter.
  • Florida does offer a sunscreen exemption certificate for medical reasons.

HOA AND COMMUNITY GUIDELINES

Many communities in Florida are governed by a Home Owners Association (HOA) or a deed-restricted community. This means standards have been put in place prohibiting certain residential window films from being used within the community.

In most cases, this only applies to the front of the house to maintain a universal look within the community. The community adheres to this universal look for consistency when guests drive down the street.

Most types of residential window films are deemed acceptable and can be installed on the side and rear of the house. Florida changed the laws in November 2023 to help homeowners with getting solor products on their homes by regulating HOA’s authority.

Please check your HOA by-laws or contact the community office to find out what restrictions apply to your community. It is the homeowners’ responsibility to procure any approval necessary before the installation of residential window films by Custom Glass Tinting of Lakeland.

Sun Screen Exemption Certificates

Florida is one of few states that has an exemption certificate for medical reasons. We carry and supply these forms to our clients. (Form HSMV 83390) www.flhsmv.gov

This allows you to have as dark of tint needed for your condition without penalty from law enforcement.

WINDOW FILM FOR MEDICAL USES

Residential window films have many benefits. One significant benefit is its use for medical purposes.
While window glass blocks most of the UVB rays that cause sunburns, UVA rays that cause tanning and premature aging still get through. Both UVB and UVA rays cause skin damage and can lead to many different kinds of skin cancers.

Window film can block up to 99% of both UVA and UVB harmful rays.

Clients can visit the Skin Cancer Foundation website for more information and a list of residential window films earning their seal of recommendation.

RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL WARRANTIES

All commercial window film installations come with a 2 to 15-year manufacturer’s warranty for peeling, blistering, darts, bubbles and delamination.

All residential films have a lifetime warranty for peeling, blistering, darts, bubbles, and delamination.

You always get a lifetime warranty on labor, which most shops “do not” offer. Please ask specifically for this type of warranty when shopping around.

Accidents happen, don’t forget to take advantage of the new “no fault warranty” to cover those accidental nicks and scratches.

FILM CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • After installation, a hazy appearance or tiny water beads may appear in your tint. These are perfectly normal results.
  • Please allow proper time to dry. Drying may take 30 – 90 days.
Do not wash or clean your window film for at least 30 days following installation.
  • ONLY wash the window film with a soft cloth and use a mild detergent (Joy or Dawn).
  • Do not use Windex or ammonia-based products. No home remedies.
